The twin alternating softener unit operates by having one tank soften water while the other is being regenerated. The first tank contains resin saturated with sodium ions, which attracts and removes calcium and magnesium ions, leaving only sodium ions that don't affect soaps and detergents, resulting in 'soft' water. Once the first tank's capacity is reached, the tanks switch roles. The regeneration process involves flushing a sodium ion solution through the tank, releasing calcium and magnesium ions and reabsorbing sodium ions, restoring the tank and resin to their original state. This process discards hard minerals, leaving soft water suitable for hotels, schools, or restaurants.
