A single tree rooted in the earth forms a forest through a chain of trees. “Shinra” was created by sawing small trees that inhabit the forest and carving out the accumulated mass. The Shinra series was designed by one of Japan's leading sculptors, Atsuhiko Misawa. Using camphor wood, he carves life-size figures of various animals and paints them, giving his wood sculptures an overwhelming presence that has captured the hearts of a wide range of viewers. His motifs range from familiar animals to imaginary creatures, and he continues to pursue a unique reality that differs from realism.
