Peak Rock

A mecca for UK climbing, the Peak District sucks in climbers from all over the world to test themselves on that world renowned gritstone-friction.

Lavished with high quality photography depicting many historical moments, Peak Rock is a glorious chronology that tells the remarkable history of climbing in the Peak District.

Barker began compiling work for Peak Rock in the 1980s but the progress was halted by his premature death in ’92. Twenty years later, Kelly utilised Barker’s original research and interviews along with chapters on the significant developments from the last 30 years.

Much of the book is told through the words of top climbers including: James W Puttrell, Ron Fawcett, Jerry Moffatt, Johnny Dawes, Pete Whittaker and Steve McClure.

Best of all, our very own Derrick Bolger is (not surprisingly) part of the history (p. 214) for his groundbreaking first ascent of Curving Arête - the hardest route in the Peak at the time (and for many years after)!
