Microsorum Pteropus Sunrise

Microsorum pteropus ‘Sunrise’, also known as Java Fern Sunrise, is a unique variation that stands out for its lighter, golden-green new growth and textured leaves. Its brighter coloration adds a subtle pop compared to standard Java Fern, making it a nice option for adding contrast in planted aquariums.

Recently reclassified as Leptochilus pteropus, this plant is still widely known in the aquarium hobby as Microsorum pteropus. Like other Java Fern varieties, it is very easy to care for and adapts well to a wide range of aquarium conditions, similar to plants like Anubias, Bucephalandra, and Cryptocoryne.

It grows well in low to medium lighting with good flow and a clean water column. While it will adapt in low tech setups, the addition of CO2 and regular fertilization will improve growth and overall appearance. Its slightly serrated leaves and fuller growth make it a great space filler, especially between driftwood or hardscape where it helps create a more mature, filled-in look.

As an epiphytic plant, Java Fern Sunrise can be attached to driftwood, rocks, or placed into crevices within an aquascape. Be sure to keep the rhizome above the substrate to prevent rot. Propagation is simple—just divide the rhizome and reattach as needed.
