Our Castle Dawn Aquatics Alder Cones (Alnus glutinosa) are sustainably collected from the Irish countryside and are one of the most loved botanicals for natural aquarium setups. Known for their high tannin content, they help replicate soft, acidic blackwater environments while releasing beneficial compounds that support fish and invertebrate health.

With their naturally textured surface, alder cones cultivate rich biofilm and fungal networks, providing essential grazing material for shrimp, plecos, and small bottom-dwelling fish. As they slowly decompose, they release tannins, humic acids, and antioxidants, supporting soft-water species and encouraging natural behaviours such as grazing and breeding.

Their ability to lower pH makes them a sustainable and natural alternative to peat moss, perfect for Betta, dwarf cichlid, and shrimp tanks.

Tannins Released: High

All our botanicals are organically sourced, free from harmful pesticides and naturally sun-dried without the use of chemicals.
