The Nazis marched into Hungary in March 1944 bringing with them Eichmann and his "Final Solution" for removing all Jews from Europe. I was 10 months old when my parents handed me to their housekeeper and asked her to take me to a safe place. This safe place was the caves situated at the outskirts of Budapest. She, along with a few kind neighbors, watched over me at the risk of their own lives. Their efforts kept me out of the clutches of those who wanted me dead along with every other Jew. Sixteen months later, World War II ended and it was finally safe for me to return. The housekeeper gave me to strangers, a man and a woman who claimed to be my parents. I was weak and had to be hospitalized for malnutrition and other debilitating conditions for about one month. Meanwhile the Russians moved into the country and with them came communism and brutalization of the wealthier countrymen. We gratefully escaped and made our way to America. I didn't recall anything from my first few years, but I do recall all the stories my parents told me. I lived a normal childhood and grew into an adult. It was not until my late 30's that I was told the truth that my biological parents had been murdered by the Nazis and that my aunt and uncle adopted me and raised me as their own child.
