This mirror features end-grain ash glued together into an unusual pattern formed by book-matching each piece of wood. The frame is then thoroughly burned with a torch to deeply etch the wood. A wire brushing and coating with a white wax accentuates the annual ring pattern and highlights the inherent structural qualities of the wood. The piece combines fine woodworking with an intuitive, fire-based process evolved from the Japanese technique of shou sugi ban. The resulting black and white pattern has both visual and tactile appeal. An aluminum hanger is concealed behind the mirror to allow the piece to hang flush to the wall.
