After nearly 300 years of research, their function and meaning are still unclear, although more than 130 have been found and countless interpretations have been made: cult object, candlestick, calendar, dice, measuring instrument... The skilfully crafted dodecahedron is hollow, usually about the size of an apple**, with** twelve round openings of different sizes, and knobs at the vertices. It corresponds to the Platonic-Pythagorean symbolic tradition and was used by both men and women in the Celtic-influenced provinces of the Roman Empire from the 2nd to the 4th century AD. Was it an astral-magical artefact for communicating with deities or consulting the stars in the hands of individuals of druidic tradition—or perhaps even druids themselves?This standard work brings together everything (interpretations, philosophical background, finds, measurements, typology, comparable objects etc.) that was known about the Gallo-Roman dodecahedra up to 1999, and presents the material with numerous illustrations, plates, tables and statistical analyses.
