These unique, impressive and scarce WW2 stamps were issued in 1940 just prior to the Nazi invasion and conquest of France. They commemorate the French "grunt" (army soldier) and Foreign Legion soldier, neither of whom was able to repel Germany's then cutting edge artillery, tanks and aircraft. A few actually ending up fighting FOR Germany on the Eastern Front but many more joined the French Resistance led by Charles DeCaulle, which ultimately triumped with the help of U.S., Canadian, British and other Allied forces. The brown stamp features the French soldier on the homefront, while the blue-teal one shows a French Foreign Legion soldier standing guard at a French Colonial Outpost in Africa! May have a very faint trace of mounting on back. A mint never hinged fully gummed set is available at double the price (please email if interested). Finely rendered and detail RF (Republique Francaise) classics in mint unused and uncancelled condition.
